In the environmental realm, science and art are inextricably linked. While science determines how we measure the health of our planet, art allows us to visualize our relationship to the natural world. Art in Action collects creative interpretations of the state of our planet in word and image by 79 artists. These varied pieces express a profound appreciation for all species and landscapes, explore our natural world lost, despaired and reconstructed and describe the fantasy of paradises anew and gone awry.

From the expansive vision of Christo to the enlightened power of Olafur Eliasson, art speaks to us in as many ways as there are artists. Each chapter asks us to celebrate, reflect, interact, protect and act, demonstrating the vast and rich web of life and the interconnectedness of it all. No book can change the natural world. But these stories and photographs can build awareness, the first critical step in changing our collective story from one that exploits and destroys nature for the benefit of humankind to one that nurtures and values the natural world.

Mia Hanak is the Founding Executive Director of the Natural World Museum, an organization committed to inspiring sustainable culture through the arts in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She leads the team that produces the innovative Art for the Environment global exhibition series. She has been nominated by the American Association of Museums as a “Museum Leader for the Next Generation.” She currently resides in San Francisco.

Randy Rosenberg is an artist and has also curated many art collections for international organizations including The World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her traveling exhibitions include: The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama and Envisioning Change; Attitudinal and Climate.

The Natural World Museum (NWM) presents art as a catalyst to inspire and engage the public in environmental awareness and action. For more information, visit online at artintoaction.org.
